In the United States, a popular Instagram personality has been accused of stealing millions of dollars in bitcoins from her followers. He allegedly persuaded the «victims to sell him their bitcoins at attractive but inflated values,» but never paid them the money for the coins they sent him.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Wednesday that a popular Instagram personality known as «Jay Mazini» has been charged with wire fraud related to a bitcoin scam. The DOJ wrote:
Yesterday, a complaint was filed in Brooklyn Federal Court against Jegara Igbara, also known as «Jay Mazini,» on charges of fraudulent use of a scheme in which the defendant allegedly induced victims to send bitcoins to him by falsely claiming to have sent wire transfers to bitcoin exchanges.
Beginning in or around January 2021, Igbara began posting videos on his Instagram account and offered to buy bitcoins from other Instagram users at 3.5-5% above market value.
